Job Description:
The Memphis VA Medical Center has an opening for a Neurologist
that offers a dual academic appointment with the University of
Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The position reports
directly to the Section Chief of Neurology and works as a member of
a multidisciplinary healthcare team within the Specialty Medicine
Clinic and collaborates with medical center staff to provide the
best care possible to veterans. The Medical Center consists of one
main campus and ten community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs).
It’s a 1a-complexity tertiary care VA healthcare system located in
one of the fastest-growing Veteran population regions in the United
States. The facility provides comprehensive care to over 47,000
veterans in a 52-county area of Western Tennessee, Northern
Mississippi, and Northeast Arkansas. It includes 236 inpatient beds
with a 26-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit. It is a teaching hospital,
providing a full range of patient care services, with
state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and
research programs. Duties include but are not limited to: - Provide
consultation on various forms of neurological disease states, both
for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient
settings. - Supervise and teach neurology fellows, residents, and
medical students. - Lead and manage the neurology team consisting
of neurology fellows, residents, medical students, pharmacists, and
mid-level providers while on inpatient service or in a clinical
setting. - Share attending call responsibilities with other
neurologists in covering some nights, weekend, and holiday calls as
needed. - Round with a team of fellows, residents, and medical
students as regards to inpatient settings. - Responsible for
recognizing patients appropriate for referral or consultation with
the collaborating physician. Consultations with collaborating
physicians may occur through personal, telephone, or electronic
media contact. - Clinical activities may include, but are not
limited to, clinical assessments and evaluations – inpatient and
outpatient. Healthcare management of assigned veteran patients with
acute and chronic illnesses. - Ordering and interpreting laboratory
and diagnostic studies. - Health promotion and disease prevention
education: patient, family members, caregivers, staff education,
and counseling. - Administrative requirements include performance
improvement activities, research, and non-clinical tasks as
assigned. - Exhibit leadership by initializing changes in patient
care programs based on current concepts and findings from research
and studies. Stays informed on developments in the management and
treatment of diseases and illnesses through continuing medical
