Job Description:
The rapidly expanding Hospitalist Medicine Program at St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a Pediatrician/Pediatric
Hospitalist to join our team as a Staff Physician. Our Hospitalist
Program is set in a world-class medical environment and allows for
hands-on patient experiences covering a full range of hematologic
and oncologic diagnoses. We are recruiting highly motivated
individuals who enjoy both inpatient and urgent care practice to
join our program. The Hospitalist Medicine Program includes
approximately 14 physicians and 12 advanced practice providers,
many of whom are board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology.
In this role, you will treat patients on the inpatient units (night
shifts) and in our on-site outpatient acute care clinic (24/7). We
offer a flexible schedule with approximately 14 shifts per month
(shifts are 9-12.5 hours). This position may work weekdays,
weeknights, and/or weekends. As an integral member of the
hospitalist team, you will work with nursing staff, advanced
practice practitioners, hospitalist colleagues, primary
oncologists, and subspecialty physicians to ensure quality clinical
care for St. Jude patients. Night coverage includes multiple
hospitalist providers with Pediatric Intensive Care support also
available in-house 24/7. Top subspecialty and surgical support are
available on home call each evening. Members of the Hospitalist
Program are active in medical education, quality and patient safety
initiatives, clinical education of trainees, and clinical research.

in which to work. Works with clinical staff to ensure the safety
and quality of clinical care and support for patients at St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital. Supervises staff, performs patient
care duties, and ensures compliance and accurate reporting. Job
Responsibilities: Performs patient-care duties according to
established standards, general and service-specific scopes of care,
policies and procedures, and patient-specific protocols. Annually
demonstrates performance competency in each of the following:
Obtains Informed Consent for research protocols. Inquires about
medical, family, and social histories and performs physical
examination. Orders appropriate diagnostic studies. Interprets
patient data to accurately diagnose disease and disease stage.
Identifies appropriate medical treatment, whether protocol or
non-protocol. Monitors and evaluates patient response to medical
treatment. Facilitates appropriate patient referrals. Provides
patient and family support. Provides patient follow-up to other
health care providers, including referring physicians. Prescribes
medications as appropriate and writes the drug orders in accordance
with clinical privileges. Monitors patient in accordance with SJCRH
standards. Provides consultation services for the nursing staff
regarding questions relating to clinical care visits, discharge of
inpatients and difficult medical management cases. Works with the
other physicians as appropriate concerning potentially difficult
patient care questions, drug usage, procure requirements, etc.
Evaluates patient for need for and level of prescription medicines
required and consider alternative techniques for patient care.
Interacts and discusses with primary physicians and patient family
appropriate patient care and prescription medicines. Provides
reports as necessary to third party providers and sub-specialists.
Acts as a participatory member of the clinical care teams. Complies
with all clinical staff bylaws, rules and regulations. Directly
supervises assigned staff to include performance, scheduling,
continuing education, and work assignments. Participates in
performance appraisals. Provides opportunities for staff
development of assigned staff. Implements and maintains on-going
education of clinical staff. Facilitates clinical experience of
Postdoctoral Fellows. Promotes communication between clinic staff
and fellows. Participates in on-going assessment of fellows in the
clinic. Participates in continuing educational efforts for nurse
practitioners and other health care providers. Compliance and
Reporting: Ensures compliance with HCFA billing guidelines and
other regulatory agencies, as appropriate. Submits information and
reports as required. Develops mechanisms to monitor compliance and
quality. Works collaboratively with other clinic staff (e.g.,
schedulers, nursing management, etc.) to resolve issues that may
arise. Develops timely, accurate, and meaningful reports regarding
the operation of the department. Provides periodic status reports
to the Department Chair. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills
necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of
the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of
the principles of growth and development for all ages served.
Demonstrates ability to assess and interpret age-specific data
about the patient’s status. Identifies the patient’s age-specific
needs. Provides age-appropriate care for all ages served. Serves
the following age groups: Infant toddler (0-6 years), School-age
(6-11 years), Adolescent (12- 20 years). Participates in the
detection, reporting, and improvement of systems to prevent patient
care incidents and improve patient safety and quality. Performs
other related duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and
objectives of the department and the institution. Maintains regular
and predictable attendance. Minimum Education and/or Training:
Board certified or eligible in Pediatrics required. Board certified
or eligible in specialty area preferred Minimum Experience:
Experience in Pediatrics or specialty area preferred Licensure,
Registration and/or Certification Required by Law: Unrestricted
medical license to practice in the State of Tennessee Licensure,
Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only: Must
maintain active unrestricted privileges at SJCRH Compensation In
recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency
laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the
compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in
good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors
that are considered in making compensation decisions including but
not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and
certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is
not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the
salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts
and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the
current salary range is $167,377 - $347,630 per year for the role
of Staff Physician-Hospitalist (Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology).
