Job Description:
The Pharmacy Intern works under the direction of a pharmacy
manager, follows established policies and procedures to perform a
variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are
integral to the operation of the Pharmaceutical Department. Tasks
include preparation of unit dose medications, outpatient
prescriptions, intravenous admixtures, cytotoxic and other
investigational drugs. These tasks are designed to assist the
department in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical
supplies and require the authorized review and check of a licensed
pharmacist. Also responsible for stocking and reordering of
pharmacy supplies, assisting in mail-out orders and replenishing of
nursing floor stock. Maintains appropriate patient computer and
manual records, and performs computer order entry of patient
orders. Assists in nursing unit inspections. Assists with
management of investigational drugs. Performs other related duties
as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives
of the department. The intern in this role is expected to work at
least one weekend a month (Saturday and Sunday shifts) and one
evening each week. During summer and winter breaks, the intern role
can work additional hours to train for new skills, support patient
care, or shadow pharmacists. Quarterly intern meetings, research
projects, and other patient care experiences are available to
further develop this person. If assigned a shift during inclement
weather, the intern is expected to work since we are essential
employees. Job Responsibilities: Performs all responsibilities of
pharmacy technician certified level I. Performs dispensing
functions in the intravenous program. Facilitates workflow in the
inpatient dispensing area. Assists pharmacists in the outpatient
dispensing area. Maintains appropriate patient records. Prepares
cytotoxic medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate and safe handling of
cytotoxic agents. Verifies labeled dose with patient order. Assures
that all work is checked by a pharmacist before dispensing.
Performs computer entry of patient medication orders. Demonstrates
knowledge of terminology and abbreviations required to process
patient orders. Is familiar and proficient with all components of
computer system required for patient order entry. Performs other
related duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals
and objectives of the department. Assists the pharmacists with
routine duties associated with operation of the inpatient and
outpatient pharmacy areas to facilitate workflow and maintain
appropriate patient and mail-out records. Assists the
investigational studies pharmacist as needed including the
compounding of investigational drugs and investigational drug
inventory maintenance to include ordering drug returns and
documentation. Accurately files and maintains patient care records.
Completes charges/credits in a timely and accurate manner.
Maintains accountability records for the ambulatory infusion
devices and perform routine audits. Provides one continuing
education program per year to technician staff regarding primary
work area assignment. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Education and/or Training: Two years of college with
acceptance and/or enrollment at an accredited college of pharmacy
required. Minimum Experience: State the minimum years of experience
required to do this job successfully. Pharmacy experience

reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This
is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer
takes into account factors that are considered in making
compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets,
experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other
business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an
individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and
compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances
of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is
$21.00 - $35.50 per hour for the role of Pharmacy Intern. Explore
