Job Description:

Sonoco Products, a global packaging company, is seeking skilled/experienced Mechanics in Memphis, TN (Presidents Island Plant Location)

* Rate of Pay: $28.68 - $37.56/hour

A Team Leader (Mechanic) at Sonoco Products Company, Presidents Island, is part of a skilled maintenance team and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. In this position, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment to perform at optimum levels. To succeed in this role, you must be able to work with various teams in a fast-paced environment and have a high attention to detail. This role also has some leadership responsibilities of guiding operators and forklift drivers in certain situations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance

Responsible for the maintenance of all assigned equipment:

* Perform preventive maintenance as assigned daily, weekly, monthly, etc., per PMC program
* Sign out all parts and tools taken from the storeroom return any that were not used
* Fill out work order detail and turn into the appropriate Maintenance Planner
* Perform all equipment set-ups and adjustments to ensure quality compliance to all measurable attributes

Equipment & Measurable Attributes Include:

* Littell: primary sheet index, sheet length, sheet gage / thickness & Rockwell hardness
* Scrolls: strip width & secondary scroll index
* Coater: film weight, spot coat registration, wax / zurn application
* Press: end dimensions counter sink, curl height, outside diameter & compound weight / placement
* Ultraseal: end dimensions counter sink, curl height, outside diameter, compound weight / placement, pop / peel force, membrane blow offs, valve placement / adhesion & flow
* Perform scheduled equipment audits to determine equipment condition versus manufactures specification
* Work with Maintenance Planner & Supervisor to schedule all necessary repairs that require equipment shut down
* Direct team members on performing Sanitation PM's in parallel with Equipment PM's when possible
* Timely completion of the maintenance training program within the prescribed schedule
* Participate in the continuous improvement efforts on maintenance effectiveness to eliminate breakdowns and increase equipment reliability.

Production

Responsible for maximizing the uptime of the assigned equipment:

* Know operating standards (units per hour & scrap %) for assigned equipment and monitor every hour for the duration of the shift
* Verify equipment is operating at theoretical speeds (strokes or units per hour)
* Make all necessary equipment adjustments to achieve operational standards
* Manufacture orders per the production schedule
* Organize changeovers in advance to minimize unnecessary downtime
* Assign work to team members during unexpected interruptions to restore operations as quickly as possible. These tasks include boxing off rings / blanks, feeding in rings / blanks, sorting, housekeeping & QA checks.
* Audits production reports periodically for accuracy including proper identification of products / materials and correct any discrepancies
* Manage breaks and lunch periods per expectations to avoid unnecessary productivity losses
* Monitor work methods of team members and provide direction when inconsistencies with preferred practices are observed
* Participate in the continuous improvement efforts to minimize unnecessary production stops to increase output per hour.

Quality

Responsible for building quality into the product because of effective PM's and equipment set up / adjustment:

* Clearly understands the requirements per the specified control plan
* Checks all measurable attributes as defined in the control plan and validates specifications are met, maintained and remain in control (SPC)
* Organizes and directs team to follow any prescribed trials and/or equipment changeovers plans
* Reviews all defective product generated from assigned equipment during scheduled shift ensuring it is properly flagged, reported and staged in the designated areas
* Periodically verifies that all quality checks performed by team as assigned in the control plan
* Assist with Root Cause / Corrective Action investigations for any defective product produced by the team (HFIs, complaints, returns, etc.) as well as the response to the customer where applicable to eliminate reoccurrence
* Participate in the continuous improvement efforts outside of Root Cause / Corrective Action by offering suggestions on equipment setup and/or work methods to reduce nonconformance.

Safety

Follows and enforces all safety rules/regulations, exemplifies the belief that working safe is a condition of employment and that all injuries are preventable. Supports plant safety efforts by leading by example:

* Inspects assigned equipment to ensure it is in safe operating condition
* Verifies all safety devices (guards, control circuit devices, stop blocks, etc.) on assigned equipment are always intact and properly secured
* Follows all energy isolation requirements
* Monitors the housekeeping and safety habits of team members interacting when deficiencies to policy / procedures are observed

QUALIFICATIONS:

* At least one (1) year of maintenance experience
* Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferred
* High school diploma or equivalent, preferred
* Able to perform the physical requirements of the job, including lifting up to 50lbs as needed.
