POSITION. JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Research
Assistant performs research on different novel knock-in and
knock-out mouse models of human cardiomyopathy/ heart failure in
the Pediatrics Department. Maintains animal colonies, performs
genotyping/phenotyping, and assists in performing non-surgical and
surgical procedures on animals. Assists with primary cell
isolations, cultures, and the maintenance of a large research
database. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs animal non-surgical
and surgical procedures including handling animals, genotyping (ear
punching and tail cut), tissue collection, perfusion, phenotyping,
stress tests, and assists in surgical procedures. Extracts genomic
DNA from mouse-tails, Polymerase Chain Reactions. Prepares media
and reagents for cell culture/animal work. Maintains sterilization
of cell culture materials and surgical tools/supplies. Assists in
basic laboratory techniques such as primary cell isolation,
immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, cloning, mutagenesis, and
transfection. Updates mouse breeding and research database;
documents all procedures, tracks research supplies and sample
inventory. Performs routine equipment maintenance and lab safety.
Prepares standard operating procedures, writes proper analytical
methods and technical information, assists with oversight, and
trains students if needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree
in Biology, Physiology, or in one of the sciences (TRANSCRIPT
REQUIRED) EXPERIENCE: OR Combination of college course work and
work experience to equal 8 years. (Previous animal handling and
maintenance, genetic techniques including RNA/DNA isolation and PCR
experience preferred). (Prior experience working with
mice/tissue/cell isolation and culture preferred). KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Strong ability to work independently with
laboratory animals. Ability to perform cell cultures with strong
practical experience in aseptic technique. Skills in data entry.
Strict attention to detail and good organizational skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, positive
problem-solving skills. Detail oriented in animal handling and
genotyping. Highly organized, computer knowledge and usage are
required. Ability to stay abreast with new advances in techniques,
instrumentation and technology. An official transcript or
documentation to verify education must be submitted in a sealed
envelope to the Human Resources Department prior to first day of
employment if selected for a position.
